The Canadian Agricultural Human Resource Council (CAHRC) has teamed-up with the agri-industry, provincial and federal governments and educational institutions on two projects that will assist producers and agricultural workers connect more effectively to employment opportunities.
The Labour Market Information (LMI): Agricultural Supply and Demand Forecast Model project will provide an overview of the current agricultural labour markets, and forecast labour supply and demand nationally, provincially, by occupation and by commodity. It will then investigate opportunities and barriers to participation among groups in Canada’s population that have been traditionally under-represented in the agricultural workforce. Removing barriers will improve their access to job opportunities in agriculture, thereby increasing the agricultural labour pool and addressing the current labour shortage for the industry.
The National Agricultural Occupational Framework and Labour Market Support (NAOF) project will develop detailed occupational profiles of agricultural jobs from the entry to manager levels across 10 commodity areas. Never before has such a comprehensive definition of Canada’s agricultural work been undertaken. This expanded job data will then be converted into a set of tools that connect job and youth internship seekers with producers that are hiring. It will also help agricultural workers to identify and access training required for career advancement and help education providers to design training curriculum that best addresses agriculture industry needs.
Each project will call upon nearly one thousand people to participate in surveys, focus groups and other consultations to give their input and expertise, thus ensuring that the final product truly represents the labour needs of Canadian producers.
