New Statistics Canada Survey: Job Vacancies and Wages Survey now includes agriculture

February 10, 2015

New Statistics Canada Survey: An important tool for agricultural employers

On behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada, Statistics Canada will conduct a new survey (the Job Vacancies and Wages Survey) to provide valuable information on the demand side of the labour market. It will collect information from Canadian employers on job vacancies and wages for all occupations from all sectors of the economy.

The Job Vacancies and Wages Survey will provide better information on job vacancies in Canada. This survey will collect information on occupations that are in demand, job openings, the duration of job vacancies, educational and experience requirements, and offered wage/salary.  This information will be available for prevailing occupations at the economic region level. The first results for this survey are scheduled to be released by August 2015.

The Wages component will provide new information about wages by occupation on a regional basis. This survey will help employers assess whether wages being advertised are consistent with the prevailing wage for that occupation. The initial results of this component are scheduled for release in 2016.

Although the current, smaller, Statistics Canada survey about job vacancies does not include primary agriculture, the new survey will now include the agriculture industry.

Data will be collected from up to 100,000 business/organisation locations. This large sample size will provide reliable data by Statistics Canada Economic Region http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&TVD=117223.

These new surveys will help the agriculture industry to quantify the chronic labour shortages facing Canada’s agricultural businesses.

The survey will provide better labour market information to support decision making by employers, job seekers, students, and policy makers. In particular, labour market data helps Canadians make informed training and education decisions and connect with available jobs. The survey will provide reliable and comparable information on job vacancies and wages and help identify current and emerging labour market pressures. Employers will benefit from completing this questionnaire by having the ability to use the data produced by this survey to establish benchmarks for their business's labour dynamics.

Please encourage your members to complete these surveys to help Statistics Canada get an accurate picture of the agricultural employment needs in Canada.
